In the same city, under the same sky…
- 18 - 21 June 2012
In the Same City, Under the Same Sky… is a series of short films by the Polish artist Anna Konik. The artwork consists of stories from seven women with foreign background living in Tensta, a suburb outside of Stockholm. These are tales of courage, regret, alienation and attempts to enter the Swedish society.
The women talk about their experiences of living in a forgotten part of Stockholm, when the reasons for coming there seldom were voluntary, but often traumatic. In the films we see seven women with Swedish origin in their homes in the city centre of Stockholm who retell the stories from the women in Tensta. The displacement of the narrative is a means for the artist to shed light on who’s stories we are ready to listen to, who’s voice it is that counts.
MAP showed In the Same City, Under the Same Sky… to the members of the Swedish Parliament, June 18–21 2012. The public could see the work on MAP’s web page until July 1. The purpose of showing the work in these different places and formats was to reach the decision makers where they work, and at the same time, from a democratic perspective, make the work available for every citizen in Sweden.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy, Erik Ullenhag.
In connection to the opening a discussion was held on June 19 in the Parliament building with the artist Anna Konik, the journalist Maciej Zaremba and Magdalena Malm, artistic director of MAP, focusing on whose voices are being heard and listened to in our democratic society. The discussion and exhibition in the Parliament was the result of an invitation from Christer Nylander (FP), vice chairman of the Cultural Committee of the Swedish Parliament.
In the audience, in addition to the invited members of the Parliament, were several of the women who participated in the work, and representatives from the Polish Institute Stockholm, Stockholm Cultural Committee and Iaspis/The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual Artists.
Anna Konik talked about her experiences in Sweden that led to the work In the Same City, Under the Same Sky…
